Jacobus de Kerle, also known as Jacques de Kerle, was a Flemish composer born in 1531. He received his early education at the Sint-Janshospitaal in Bruges and later studied at the University of Leuven, where he showed an early interest in music.

De Kerle served as a musician and choirmaster at various churches and courts in the Low Countries, including the court of Archduchess Margaret of Austria, where he gained a reputation as a skilled composer. In 1564, he became the choirmaster at the collegiate church of Saint Pierre in Lille and in 1568, he became the choirmaster at the Cathedral of Saint Rumbold in Mechelen.

De Kerle's music is known for its expressive harmonies and rich polyphony. He wrote a variety of choral and instrumental works, including masses, motets, psalms, and secular songs. Some of his most famous works include the "Missa pro defunctis", the "Cantio nuptialis", and the "Magnificat octavi toni".

De Kerle's music was highly regarded during his lifetime and in the decades following his death. His work served as a precursor to the musical style of the Baroque era and influenced many composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach. With his imaginative approach to tonality and intricate vocal writing, de Kerle's music still holds a special place in the hearts of music lovers today.
