Short bio Hugh Davies
Full biography Hugh Davies
Hugh Davies was a British composer, performer, inventor, and musicologist who was born on April 23, 1943, in Exmouth, Devon. He is considered one of the leading British composers of experimental music. Davies began his musical career in the mid-1960s as a composer with a strong interest in electronic music, especially in live performance. He was a pioneer in experimental electronic music and often used domestic objects such as egg-slicers to produce his unique sound.
In addition to composing music , Davies was also an instrument maker and musicologist. He built his own instruments, many of which were designed to create unconventional sounds and effects. He was particularly interested in exploring the possibilities of live performance with electronic instruments.
Davies' work was highly influential in the development of electronic music and he worked with a variety of notable musicians and composers. For example, he was a member of the Music Improvisation Company and worked with musicians such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Derek Bailey. He also performed solo and as a member of various ensembles, such as the Gentle Fire group.
Sadly, Hugh Davies passed away on January 1, 2005, at the age of 61. Despite his relatively short life, his contributions to experimental electronic music and his innovative approach to composition continue to inspire and influence current generations of musicians and music enthusiasts.
