During the National Socialism period, he wrote various cantatas and songs in Nazi Germany. He died on October 25, 1983, at the age of 86.

Hermann Ambrosius started his musical education at the age of six at the Hamburg Conservatory, where he studied piano, violin, and composition. Later on, he also studied at the Leipzig Conservatory and the Berlin Academy of Music, learning from notable composers such as Max Reger and Franz Schreker.

Ambrosius was awarded numerous prizes and honors for his compositions, including the Mozart Medal of the Mozartgemeinde Wien and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
