Gottfried Rieger was a Czech composer, born on May 1, 1764, in Opavice, Silesia (now Czech Republic). He is best known for his contributions to the collection "50 Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli," which featured variations written by 51 different composers in response to a request from Anton Diabelli. Rieger wrote two variations for the collection.
In addition to his work on the Diabelli variations , Rieger composed a number of other pieces throughout his career and was also a music teacher and conductor. He attended music classes taught by Anton Emil Titl and was said to prefer his teaching over that of Joseph Haydn. Rieger died on October 13, 1855, in Prague at the age of 91.
Rieger's contributions to the Diabelli variations have cemented his place in music history and his legacy lives on through the continued performance and study of his works.
