Giovanni Animuccia was a Renaissance composer born in Florence around 1520. He was one of only a few significant composers of his time who wrote music in Florence, which was not as developed a center for music as Rome. Animuccia is particularly known for his contribution to the development of the oratorio. He began his career as a singer at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome in the 1540s and later became the maestro di capella at the Chiesa della Vallicella in Rome in 1550.

Along with Francesco Corteccia, Animuccia was one of the only significant composers who were involved in the founding of the Congregazione dell'Oratorio in Rome in the 1550s and 1560s, which was a lay religious order that would later become famous for promoting devotional music outside of the liturgical context. Animuccia's role in the Congregazione was to write music for the services that they held.

Animuccia was known for being a prolific composer. The rapidity with which he wrote some of his pieces is evident in his work, and he is known to have written many masses, motets, and madrigals, which are all part of the vocal sacred and secular music tradition of the Renaissance. His music was characterized by a careful attention to detail in the use of harmony and melody, and his reputation as a composer was well-established during his lifetime.

Today, Animuccia's music is still appreciated by historians and enthusiasts of early music. His contributions to the development of the oratorio and his prolific output make him an important figure in the history of Renaissance music.
