Short bio George Tolhurst
Full biography George Tolhurst
George Tolhurst was an Australian composer who is little known and often overlooked in the history of music. There is not much information available about him, but what little we do know suggests a life dedicated to music. Tolhurst was born in the early 19th century and gained a reputation in Maidstone as a well-known psalm singer and musician.
Tolhurst's most infamous work is an oratorio titled "Ruth," which was performed in Australia in 1864 and was widely criticized for its poor quality. Despite this setback, Tolhurst continued to compose music and is considered one of Australia's earliest composers.
While Tolhurst's work may not be as well-known as some of his contemporaries, he nevertheless made a contribution to the development of music in Australia and deserves to be recognized for his achievements.
