Ferrari was born Gabriella Colombari de Montgre , and she studied the piano with Antoine Marmontel and later studied composition with Félix Le Couppey. She performed regularly, both as a soloist and in chamber ensembles, and won several prizes for her musical abilities, including the Prix Rossini in 1870.

As a composer, Ferrari was recognized for her unique voice and her ability to weave together complex musical themes. She composed the operas "Fabrienne," "La Savelli," "Le donne di buon umore," "Un filaio di perle," and "Clever," and her songs were performed by several famous singers of her time.
