Friedhelm Dhl (7 July 1936 - 25 September 2018) was a German composer and professor of music. He studied composition with Wolfgang Fortner and piano , and in 1966 he wrote his doctoral dissertation on Anton Webern. Dhl worked as a lecturer at the Robert Schumann Conservatory in Düsseldorf from 1964 to 1967. He was a student of Fortner, and later became a professor of composition at Hochschule für Musik Köln and a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
Dhl's works include chamber music, orchestral works, vocal and choral music, and electro-acoustic compositions. He was known for his unique and expressive sound, often working with unconventional instrumental combinations and electronic sounds. He also explored non-Western musical traditions in his compositions, incorporating elements from Indian, Indonesian, and Japanese music in his works.
In addition to his career as a composer, Dhl was also an esteemed teacher, with many of his students going on to become notable composers in their own right. His impact on the German music scene was significant, and his work continues to be performed and studied around the world.
