Full biography Frederick May
Frederick May (1911-1985) was an Irish composer who is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Irish music of the 20th century. Born in Dublin, May began his studies at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and later went on to study in London with Ralph Vaughan Williams.
May's music is known for its poetic lyricism , its use of Irish folk music, and its modernist tendencies. He wrote music in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, choral music, and operas. Some of his most well-known works include his opera "The Golden Birch" and his "Cello Concerto".
May was also a distinguished teacher, and his students included many of Ireland's leading composers of the next generation. He was a professor of music at Trinity College Dublin from 1964 to 1978.
Despite his important contributions to Irish music, May's music is not as well-known as it should be outside of Ireland. However, his work continues to be performed by ensembles and orchestras in Ireland and around the world.
