Franz Tausch was a German clarinetist and composer who was born on December 26, 1762, and died on September 23, 1817. He is known for his contribution to music for the clarinet, which was a relatively new instrument at the time, and for his expertise as a performer and teacher.

Tausch's career began in the late 1700s when he studied clarinet with Joseph Beer in Munich. He then went on to perform as a clarinetist in various orchestras in Germany before settling in Berlin in 1798, where he became a member of the Royal Opera. While in Berlin, Tausch also taught clarinet at the Royal Institute of Music and published several works for the instrument, including concertos, quartets, and duets.

Tausch's compositions are known for their technical demands on the performer and their expressiveness, which were well-suited to the developing capabilities of the clarinet. His music was also influenced by the Classical and Romantic styles of the time.

Despite his contributions to music for the clarinet, Tausch is not as well-known as some of his contemporaries, such as Heinrich Baermann and Bernhard Crusell. This may be due to his lack of association with major composers of the time.
