Franz Krommer (1759-1831) was a Czech composer and violinist who was one of the most popular composers in Vienna during the 19th century. He composed more than 70 string quartets, 35 quintets, and several works for winds and strings. Krommer was born in the town of Kamenice, near Kromeriz, which is now in the Czech Republic. He began his career as a violinist, but eventually turned to composition. Krommer worked at the court of the Duke of Styria in Austria and later became the concertmaster at the main court in Vienna under the composer Joseph Haydn. He also worked as a composer with a publisher in Vienna and eventually became the director of chamber music for the imperial court.
Krommer was known for his symphonies, concertos, and chamber music. He was a prolific composer who took his craft seriously, waiting until he had gained enough experience before writing symphonies. His style was influenced by the Classical period and many of his works include elements of both Classical and Romantic music. Some of his most famous works include a concerto for two clarinets and a symphony in E-flat major. Today, his music is still performed and recorded regularly.
