Francis Boott was an American composer who lived in the 19th century. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1813 to a wealthy merchant family. Despite his family's strong reservations about pursuing a career in music, Boott became a skilled pianist, violist, and composer.

Boott's style was heavily influenced by the German Romantic composers he studied while living in Europe in the mid-1800s. He was particularly drawn to the music of Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann, and his compositions demonstrate a similar sensitivity to melody and harmony.

In 1848, Boott founded the Boston Academy of Music, which aimed to promote classical music and educate aspiring musicians. He taught composition and music theory at the academy, and also served as its director.

Boott's most famous work is his symphony in E-flat major, which premiered in Boston in 1853. It was a critical success and helped establish Boott's reputation as one of America's leading composers.

Despite his musical achievements, Boott's personal life was plagued by tragedy and mental illness. He suffered from depression and became increasingly reclusive, spending much of his later years in Switzerland before his death in 1904.

Today, Boott's contributions to American music are often overlooked, but his legacy lives on through his compositions and the students he taught at the Boston Academy of Music.
