Francesco Corteccia (July 27 , 1502 – June 7, 1571) was an Italian composer and organist who lived during the Renaissance period. He is particularly noted for his contributions as a court composer to the Medici family, primarily to Duke Cosimo I de' Medici.
Corteccia was born in Florence and came from a musical family, with his father being an organist as well. He was educated in music at the cathedral in Florence, where he later served for many years as an organist and composer. He gained a reputation during his lifetime as a skilled composer, primarily in vocal music, and was widely respected for his music.
Corteccia's most notable works include his madrigals, which were highly popular during his lifetime, as well as his church music and contributions to courtly pageants and theatrical performances. He wrote music for weddings, funerals, and other occasions, and some of his works were even performed during Medici festivals.
While Corteccia's music was largely forgotten in the centuries following his death, there has been renewed interest in his work in recent years.
