Eugen Arturovich Kapp was an Estonian composer born on May 26, 1908, in Astrakhan, Russia. Kapp was interested in music from a young age and went on to study composition at the Tallinn Conservatory under the tutelage of Artur Kapp, who was his uncle. After graduation, Kapp became a music teacher and worked in this position until 1940. During this period, he also began composing and gained recognition for his works, which include ballets, symphonies, and operas.
Kapp’s compositions often incorporate elements of Estonian folk music and he is considered one of the pioneers of Estonian classical music. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1978 for his contributions to the arts. Kapp passed away on October 29, 1996, in Tallinn, Estonia, leaving behind a legacy of compositions that continue to be performed and enjoyed to this day.
Some of Kapp’s notable works include the ballet suite Kalevipoeg (1947), his Symphony No. 2 (1951-52), and the opera The Fatal Eggs (1965). He was also known for his collaborations with other Estonian composers, such as Ester Mägi and Gustav Ernesaks. Overall, Eugen Kapp was a significant figure in Estonian music and left an enduring mark on the country’s cultural landscape.
