Ernest Reyer (Louis Étienne Ernest Reyer) was a French opera composer born on December 1, 1823, in Marseille, France. He was a contemporary of composers such as Georges Bizet and Jules Massenet. Despite being known for his serious and innovative style, Reyer did not court public favor and followed his own path as a composer.
Apart from composing, Reyer also wrote music criticism and became famous in that field. His contemporaries admired him for his serious and innovative style, but he did not achieve great fame during his lifetime. However, over time, his music has gained a following and is considered a significant contribution to the French opera genre.
Reyer was also a disciple of Hector Berlioz, whom he admired greatly. Berlioz was a significant influence on Reyer's style and composition technique. Reyer was known for his originality and was a prolific composer, with his works including Sigurd, Erostrate, Salammbô, and La Statue, among others.
Ernest Reyer died on January 15, 1909, in Le Lavandou, France, at the age of 85. Despite not achieving great fame during his lifetime, his contributions to the French opera genre have earned him a place among the notable composers of his time.
