Edgar Pierre Joseph Tinel was a Belgian composer and pianist who lived from 1854 to 1912. He was known for his prolific output of vocal music, although he also wrote instrumental works. Along with composer Peter Benoit, Tinel was at the forefront of music in Belgium in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Tinel studied music at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent , where he later served as a professor of harmony and composition. One of his most famous works, the oratorio "Franciscus", was performed in Ghent in 1895 and was later produced in Paris in 1902.

In addition to his work as a composer, Tinel was also a pianist, performing in recitals across Europe. He was also known for his work promoting authentic church music, leading the Belgian branch of the international movement for this style of music alongside Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens.

Today , Tinel's music is not as well-known as that of some of his contemporaries, but he remains an important figure in the history of Belgian classical music. In his honor, a museum in Sinaai, Belgium has been established to commemorate his life and work.
