Short bio Earle Brown
Full biography Earle Brown
Earle Brown (December 26 , 1926 – July 2, 2002) was a prominent American composer known for his innovations in contemporary classical music. Brown is often associated with the New York School of composers, which included John Cage, Morton Feldman, and others. He was a pioneer in using graphic notation and open forms, which allowed for greater improvisation and flexibility in musical performance.
Brown was born in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, and began his musical studies at the age of ten. He went on to study composition with Walter Piston at Harvard University and later with Luigi Dallapiccola in Italy. He was also a member of the armed forces during World War II and the Korean War.
Brown's early compositions were influenced by serialism and other contemporary musical styles, but he began to experiment with graphic notation in the 1950s. This approach allowed for greater collaboration between performers and composers, and was seen as a departure from the traditional rules and conventions of classical music notation.
Throughout his career, Brown collaborated with a number of notable musicians and artists, including John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Robert Rauschenberg. He also served as the director of the Center for Contemporary Music at the California Institute of the Arts in the early 1970s.
Brown passed away in 2002, but his music continues to be studied and performed by musicians around the world.
