Crawford Gates was an American musician, composer, and conductor known for his contributions to the world of music. He was born on December 29, 1921, and passed away on June 9, 2018, at the age of 96. Gates was a prolific and talented composer, having written nearly 900 titles throughout his career.
He is perhaps best known for his contributions to Mormon music , having written music for numerous productions related to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For example, he wrote the score for the Hill Cumorah Pageant, a large-scale outdoor theatrical production about the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also wrote music for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Redhead.
Gates began studying music at a young age and continued throughout his life to be interested in the many different aspects of music. He reportedly discovered an early talent for composing , having written his first piece, "Brownie's Pony," at the age of 8.
Despite his many achievements and contributions to the world of music, Gates was reportedly a humble and unassuming man. He once said, "I'm happy to brighten the little corner of the world wherever I am with my talents."
Overall , Crawford Gates was a highly regarded and accomplished composer who left a lasting impact on the world of music, particularly in the realm of Mormon music. Even though he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through the many works of music he created throughout his career.
