Full biography Clarence Lucas
Clarence Lucas (1866-1947) was a Canadian composer, conductor, and music professor known for his contributions to music both in Canada and the United States. Born on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario, Lucas was the eldest child of Rev. D.V. Lucas, a widely-traveled Methodist minister.
Lucas began his music education in Canada but later moved to Europe to continue his studies in composition and piano. He spent several years studying in Paris, where he was heavily influenced by French music and culture. Lucas's music is known for its melodiousness and lyricism, and often features elements of French impressionism.
Throughout his career, Lucas wrote a variety of music, including art songs, choral works, chamber music, and orchestral pieces. He also wrote music for film and theater, and worked as an arranger and conductor. Lucas's most popular works include his choral piece "The Dawn is Breaking," which was performed at the unveiling of the Vimy Ridge memorial in France, and his organ piece "Prière," which was dedicated to his Parisian teacher.
Lucas also had a notable association with the American actor Richard Mansfield, for whom he arranged and conducted music on several occasions. In addition to his work as a composer, Lucas was a well-respected music educator and taught at several institutions throughout his career, including the Chicago Musical College and the New York College of Music.
