Short bio Christoph Bernhard
Full biography Christoph Bernhard
Christoph Bernhard was a German Baroque composer, singer, and director. He was born on January 1, 1628, in Kolberg, Pomerania, and passed away on November 14, 1692, in Dresden, Saxony. Bernhard is considered to be one of the more accomplished composers and theoretical writers of his time.
Some of his notable works include the treatise "Von der Singe-Kunst oder Manier" and the sacred concertos "Geistlicher Harmonien." The latter was released in 2005 as an album featuring Bernhard's music.
Bernhard was also a member of Johann Rosenmuller's group at the Ospedale della Pieta in Venice, where he likely learned much of his composition skills. He served as a Kapellmeister at the courts of various German princes, including Duke August of Sachsen-Weissenfels and Johann George II, Elector of Saxony.
Bernhard's music is notable for its ornamental vocal style and use of rhetorical devices. He developed his own version of the "Musica Poetica," a rhetorical method of composition that incorporated musical figures with their equivalents in poetry. He also wrote several treatises on music theory, including "Von der Singe-Kunst oder Manier," which outlined his thoughts on vocal performance.
In summary, Christoph Bernhard was an accomplished German Baroque composer and theoretical writer known for his ornamental vocal style and use of rhetorical devices. His legacy continues to be celebrated today through recordings of his works and studies of his contributions to music theory.
