Carrie Bond is a celebrated African-American composer who made significant contributions to the world of classical music during the 20th century. Born on August 16, 1862, in Hagerstown, Maryland, USA, Bond was the daughter of enslaved parents and grew up in a family of musicians. Bond started playing the piano at an early age and was soon recognized for her extraordinary talent. She went on to study music at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, one of the most prestigious music schools in the country at the time.

Bond began her career as a composer in the late 1890s and soon gained recognition for her piano compositions. Her work was deeply influenced by the African-American spirituals and songs that she heard as a child, and this influence is evident in her music. In 1913, Bond's musical career took a significant leap forward when she wrote "The Negro Race," a groundbreaking choral work that celebrated the achievements of African-Americans throughout history.

Some of Bond's other notable compositions include "Dreams," "Evening," and "At Twilight." She wrote a total of over 200 pieces of music, many of which are still performed today. Her music was groundbreaking in its combination of traditional European classical music and African-American musical forms, creating a unique and powerful sound.

Despite facing many obstacles as a black composer in a predominantly white field, Bond persisted and made a significant impact on the world of classical music. She died on December 29, 1946, leaving behind a rich legacy of music that continues to inspire and captivate audiences today.
