Carlo Coccia was an Italian composer born on April 14, 1782, in Naples, Italy, and died on April 13, 1873, in Milan, Italy. He was known for his contributions to the genre of opera semiseria, and he was a contemporary of Gaetano Donizetti and Gioachino Rossini, among others. He studied under Giuseppe Sarti and Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli and began his composing career writing sacred music.

Coccia composed over 60 operas, which were performed at various theaters throughout Italy. His most famous work is "Il matrimonio per procura," which premiered at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1810. This work was so popular that it was performed all over Europe, including in Vienna and Paris.

Coccia was also a teacher of music theory, composition, and singing. Some of his notable students include Giovanni Pacini, who went on to become a leading composer of the opera seria, and Maria Rosa Coccia, who was his granddaughter and became an accomplished composer in her own right.

In addition to his opera compositions, Coccia also wrote pieces of sacred music, including masses and motets. His works are known for their melodic beauty, intricate ensemble writing, and expressive use of harmony.
