Short bio Carl Ruggles
Full biography Carl Ruggles
Carl Ruggles was a prominent American composer, painter, and teacher who lived from 1876 to 1971. He is known for his innovative pieces of music and his unique style of composition, employing "dissonant counterpoint," which is a term coined by fellow composer and musicologist Charles Seeger.
Ruggles was born in Massachusetts and had a love for music from a young age, beginning violin lessons when he was just six years old. He went on to study at Harvard University and the New England Conservatory of Music before embarking on a career as a composer.
Throughout his career, Ruggles composed a relatively small amount of music, only 84 minutes in total, but he is considered among the most influential composers of the 20th century. His work had a profound impact on the experimental, avant-garde music scene during his time.
In addition to his musical pursuits, Ruggles was also a talented painter and often drew inspiration from his surroundings in the Vermont mountains, where he lived for over half a century. He was known for his eccentric personality and his strong opinions about music, which sometimes put him at odds with his contemporaries.
Ruggles' most famous works include "Portals," "Angels," and "Sun-Treader." His contributions to American music were recognized with various awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Medal.
Despite his comparatively small output of music, Ruggles is remembered as a monumental figure in the American avant-garde music scene. His work has had a lasting impact on experimental music and continues to inspire and intrigue musicians and listeners alike.
