Blanche of Castile was a 13th-century queen consort of France and a composer of sacred music. Born in 1188, Blanche was the daughter of King Alfonso VIII of Castile and his wife Eleanor of England. She was married at a young age to King Louis VIII of France and became queen consort when he ascended to the throne in 1223.

In addition to her political duties as queen, Blanche was known for her musical talents. She composed several motets and hymns, often in honor of the Virgin Mary. Some of her surviving works include "Flos florum" and "Salve virgo virginum". Blanche's compositions were highly regarded during her lifetime and were often performed at the royal court.

Blanche was also known for her patronage of the arts, particularly of illuminations and manuscripts. She commissioned the creation of several famous works, including the "Livres des Merveilles", a book of wonders written in French and illustrated with beautiful images.

Despite the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated society, Blanche was a powerful and influential figure in medieval France. She acted as regent for her son, King Louis IX, during his minority and was instrumental in securing his succession to the throne. Blanche passed away in 1252, leaving behind a legacy as both a political leader and a talented composer.
