Bernard Stevens (1916-1983) was a British composer, known for his contributions to contemporary classical music. He was a prolific composer, with over 150 works to his name, including chamber music, symphonies, operas, and concertos.

Stevens became interested in music at a young age and studied composition with Ralph Vaughan Williams and Alan Bush. His early compositions were heavily influenced by the music of his teachers, but he eventually developed his own distinctive style, which was characterized by complex harmonies and a strong sense of drama.

One of Stevens' best-known works is his Violin Concerto, which was commissioned by violinist Max Rostal while Stevens was serving in the British army during World War II. The concerto was performed by Rostal and the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1946 and was later recorded by Yfrah Neaman and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Stevens also wrote several operas, including The Shadow of the Glen, which he completed while battling cancer. The opera was recorded in the year before his death and has been praised for its haunting music and powerful emotional impact.

Despite his talent and productivity, Stevens was not as well known as some of his contemporaries, such as Benjamin Britten and Michael Tippett. Some have speculated that this was due to a general lack of interest in composers from his generation.
