August Rockel was a German composer who lived in the early to mid 19th century. He was born on September 14, 1805, in the city of Dresden, and showed an early talent for music. His father, Johann Michael Rockel, was a musician and an organist at the Frauenkirche, and he taught August the basics of music theory and composition.

August went on to study music formally at the Dresden Conservatory, where he excelled in his studies and composed several works, including symphonies, chamber music, and operas. His music was greatly influenced by the Romantic era, which was characterized by its emotional intensity and dramatic expressiveness.

Rockel's most notable works include his opera "Der Bürgermeister von Sachsenheim," which premiered in 1833 and was received positively by audiences and critics alike. He also composed several vocal and choral pieces, including "Die Birke" and "Die Letzten Rosen," both of which were popular at the time.

Despite his early success as a composer, Rockel struggled financially throughout much of his life. He supported himself by working as a music teacher and conductor, and he continued to compose until his death on November 17, 1891.

Today, August Rockel's music is not as well-known as that of his contemporaries, such as Schumann and Mendelssohn, but his works remain a testament to the creativity and passion of the Romantic era.
