Full biography Arthur Farwell
Arthur Farwell (1872-1952) was an American composer, conductor, educationalist, lithographer, esoteric savant, and music publisher. Although he did not intend to pursue a professional career in music , Farwell became one of America's most influential composers.
Farwell is often referred to as "the most neglected composer in American musical history." He was a prominent figure in the Indianists movement , which aimed to incorporate Native American musical elements into Western classical music. Inspired by his travels throughout the American Southwest and his interactions with Native American tribes, Farwell sought to capture the essence of the land and its people in his compositions.
As a composer, Farwell wrote a wide range of music, including orchestral works, chamber music, vocal pieces, and piano works. His compositions often featured rich harmonies, expressive melodies, and rhythmic vitality. Farwell's music exhibits a blend of Western classical traditions and Native American musical influences, creating a unique and distinct sound.
In addition to his compositional work, Farwell was also a prolific writer and educator. He wrote extensively on topics related to music theory, composition, and Native American music. He was a firm believer in the importance of music education and played an active role in promoting music in schools.
Farwell was also involved in music publishing, founding the Wa-Wan Press in 1901. Through this publishing venture, he sought to promote American music and composers. The Wa-Wan Press published not only Farwell's own works but also compositions by other American composers.
Despite his significant contributions to the American music scene, Farwell's music remains relatively unknown and underappreciated. However, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in his work, and some efforts have been made to bring his compositions to a wider audience.
Overall, Arthur Farwell was a composer of great talent and vision, whose music reflects his deep appreciation for the American landscape and its cultural diversity. His contributions to American music and his dedication to education and publication continue to resonate, making him a noteworthy figure in the history of American classical music.
