Short bio Antoine Dauvergne
Full biography Antoine Dauvergne
Antoine Dauvergne (1713-1797) was a French composer known for his contributions to music during the Baroque and Rococo periods. Dauvergne began his music career as a violinist and later became the music master of King Louis XV. He wrote 15 operas, many of which were in collaboration with librettist Jean-Francois Marmontel, and is considered one of the pioneers of the opéra-bouffon genre, which combined spoken French dialogue with sung arias and ensembles.
Dauvergne's operas include "Les troqueurs" (The Barterers), which was first performed at the Foire Saint-Laurent in Paris in 1753. The opera was well received and became one of Dauvergne's most successful works. Other notable operas by Dauvergne include "La coquette trompée" (The Deceived Coquette) and "La double coquette" (The Double Coquette).
In addition to operas, Dauvergne also wrote instrumental music, including the Concerts de Simphonies, which were highly esteemed in his lifetime. He also served as the superintendent of the King's music and was responsible for the musical education of the royal children.
Today, Dauvergne's music is less well known than that of some of his contemporaries, such as Jean-Philippe Rameau. However, his contributions to French music during the 18th century remain significant, and his operas continue to be performed and recorded by modern-day ensembles.
