Full biography Andre Laporte
André Laporte (born 12 July 1931) is a Belgian composer, musicologist, teacher and philosopher. He is known for his playful and colorful musical style, as well as his extensive involvement in the international contemporary music scene.
Laporte was self-taught as a musician, quickly mastering the piano, clarinet and organ, while enthusiastically acquainting himself with modern music. He also studied musicology at the Catholic University of Leuven and obtained a doctorate with a thesis on the music of Alban Berg.
Laporte's music features intricate rhythms, rich harmonies, and a great sense of humor. He often plays with contrasts, mixing tonal and atonal elements, and incorporating references to popular culture. Among his most famous works are his Piano Concerto, his chamber opera Marie-Antoinette, and his Symphony No. 1.
Laporte has also been active in the international music community, serving as a member of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) for over 40 years. He helped to set up a new ISCM Belgian section in 1972 , after Belgium had been inactive in the society for some time. Laporte is also a respected teacher and has taught composition at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Music in Antwerp.
