vespri

A vesper is an evening song. It also refers to evening prayers, and then it's usually plural as vespers.

The service of Vespers takes us through creation, sin, and salvation in Christ. It leads us to the meditation of God's word and the glorification of his love for men. It instructs us and allows us to praise God for the particular events or persons whose memory is celebrated and made present to us in the Church.

Its name derives from a riot that took place in a church outside Palermo at the hour of vespers on Easter Monday, March 30, 1282.

The Sicilian Vespers (Italian: Vespri siciliani; Sicilian: Vespiri siciliani) was a successful rebellion on the island of Sicily that broke out at Easter 1282 against the rule of the French-born king Charles I of Anjou, who had ruled the Kingdom of Sicily since 1266.
