Tropak or trepak is a traditional Ukrainian folk dance that spread throughout the Russian Empire. The tropak shares many musical and choreographic characteristics with the better known hopak.

Trepak (Russian: Трепак; Ukrainian: Трoпак, Трiпак) is one of the character dances from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's famous 1892 ballet The Nutcracker. It is based on the traditional Russian and Ukrainian folk dance also called the trepak. In the Ukrainian language the trepak is known as tropak (or tripak).

Trepak is one of the most celebrated and recognizable works from Tchaikovsky's ballet, The Nutcracker. Based on traditional Ukrainian folk dance melodies, Trepak is lively classic, great for concerts at any time of the year.

The Nutcracker ballet was written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1892. Trepak is one of the most widely known Russian dances from the Nutcracker suite. One of my favorite movement representations of this piece is in Disney's Fantasia.

Tchaikovsky was inspired by the Russian Trepak, a dance with Cossak origins. It is an animated dance in 2/4 time, and it is typically performed by men and features prisiadka (kicking the legs from a squatting position). Tchaikovsky's Trepak is one of the most recognized examples of art music from the ballet.

The first performance of the Christmas ballet was held as a double premiere together with Tchaikovsky's last opera, Iolanta, around the Christmas holiday season on December 18 [O.S. December 6] 1892, at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia.

What is the structure of the Trepak? - This piece of music although it has a very fast tempo the structure and form is very straightforward. - Trepak is made up of two themes a bridge and the finale (the coda). Theme one is repeated.

Because the first nutcrackers were made as replicas of soldiers and other figures of authority. The common folk took great enjoyment in having the ruling people working for them, cracking their "hard nuts of life". The term "wooden toy soldier" differentiates this type of nutcracker from the other types.
