What is a Steel Band?A steel band, also called a steel orchestra or pan orchestra, is a musical group that typically performs using instruments made from oil barrels and metal pipes. The group's music originated in Trinidad and Tobago and became popular in Caribbean and calypso music.

Traditional steel band instruments are made from 55 gallon steel oil barrels. The tops and bottoms of the barrels are hammered or shaped to create different pitches and tones. Each steel drum, or pan, typically produces a single note or range of notes. A steel band often includes a variety of different pans to cover a full musical range.

Steel bands typically perform calypso, soca, and other Caribbean genres of music. The pan players accompany singers or play instrumental pieces. They often play at Carnival celebrations and parades, using elaborate choreographed performances and colorful costumes.

A performing ensemble of trained musicians who perform upon primitive percussion instruments made of pans and oil drums (steel drums). The steel band was developed in Trinidad in the 1930's.

To make a steel drum, or a pan, the bottom of an oil drum is first pounded into a bowl, then shaped and tuned with hammers to form distinct resonating surfaces. During the banding process, the metal band is placed on the product roll and tensioned. After the steel coil bands are placed around the roll and sufficiently tensioned, the strap is sealed to itself. There are a couple of different methods for joining the strap to itself.
