Steel bands play the music of the Caribbean islands like Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad, including lilting Calypso, soca, and iconic Jamaican reggae. Many take classic pop and rock tunes and add a dash of tropical rhythm, for a joyous sound that gets everyone's hips swaying!

Steel drum music is special because it is one of the few genres of music that originated in the Caribbean. It is played on a unique instrument made from a 55-gallon oil drum. The sound of the steel drum is distinctive and has a joyful, upbeat quality. It is often associated with the laid-back island lifestyle.

Steel bands are tradionally embellished with a rhythm section (known as an 'engine room'), including drum kit, congas, iron (brake drum), cowbell, maracas, tambourine, woodblock and any other percussion instrument which suits the arranger's purpose.

Traditionally, calypsos have been the most popular style of music played on the steel pan (steel drum) but the instrument is versatile.

Steel band or Band chain These types of chains consist of a long narrow strip of steel of uniform width of 12 to 16 mm and thickness of 0.3 to 0.6 mm. These steel bands are available in 20m and 30m lengths. This chain is divided by brass studs at every 20 cm.

To make a steel drum, or a pan, the bottom of an oil drum is first pounded into a bowl, then shaped and tuned with hammers to form distinct resonating surfaces. Steel bands are stylistically versatile, but the most common steel band conventions of melodic phrasing and rhythmic structure are related to Calypso music.

During the banding process, the metal band is placed on the product roll and tensioned. After the steel coil bands are placed around the roll and sufficiently tensioned, the strap is sealed to itself. There are a couple of different methods for joining the strap to itself.
