The single stroke roll is a sticking pattern alternating between right and left hand. Make sure you play just one clean note on each hand, and as you build speed (after all, it is called a 'roll') try to maintain relaxed hands and arms.

There are four basic strokes to drumming: The Up-Stroke: Stick starts low and ends high, using a whipping motion. The Down-Stroke: Stick starts high and is stopped low. The Tap: Stick starts low and ends low.

Starting with the single. Then you play a double with your left hand a double with your right hand and then you end with a single with your left.

The double stroke roll works just like the single stroke roll - it's played in a sequence of alternating strokes (roll). But instead of having one stroke per hand you'll have two, as shown on the sheet music below. You can use full wrist turns to play each stroke of the double stroke at slower speeds.
