A sequencer is a device used in music production to arrange and play back musical notes or events in a desired order or sequence. Sequencers record the notes or events and play them back automatically.
There are two main types of sequencers:- **Step sequencers**: Notes are arranged in discrete time steps and patterns are programmed by turning "steps" on or off. Step sequencers were used in early analog synthesizers.
- **Track sequencers**: Notes are arranged on individual timelines or "tracks". Track sequencers are used in modern digital audio workstations (DAWs).
Sequencers allow music producers to quickly and easily create repetitive rhythm patterns, melodies, and other musical elements without having to play them in real time. They give more creative control over the arrangement and playback of a song's various components.
