psalmody, singing of psalms in worship. In biblical times professional singers chanted psalms during Jewish religious services. Occasionally, the congregation interpolated a short refrain between the chanted verses. The alternation of soloist and chorus was called responsorial psalmody (see responsory).

What's the big idea? The book of Psalms expresses worship. Throughout its many pages, Psalms encourages its readers to praise God for who He is and what He has done. The Psalms illuminate the greatness of our God, affirm His faithfulness to us in times of trouble, and remind us of the absolute centrality of His Word.

“Call and response,” “responsive,” or “responsorial” is a singing performance style in which a solo singer (leader) and a group of singers (congregation, choir) sing alternately, in response to each other. It is one of the oldest musical forms and common to many peoples, cultures, and religions.

The psalms are intended for singing. Singing engages us much more deeply – heart, mind, soul, and strength – with these profound and ancient songs of prayer and praise. Singing the psalms is also a significant part of our Reformed liturgical heritage.

This means a psalm could be defined as “a song that Old Testament authors wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, contained within the book of Psalms.” The Church can still sing psalms today.

The Psalms are a resounding call for all God's people and for all the world to sing! We are called to sing songs of confession and trust in God; to sing songs of thanksgiving and praise.
