A piccolo trumpet is physically smaller trumpet with less tubing than a normal Bb trumpet resulting in a pitched trumpet that is one octave higher. Typically, piccolo trumpets are keyed in Bb and A giving flexibilty in use for multiple orchestral settings.

It is higher in pitch by a full octave. That means if you play a “C” in the middle of the staff on your trumpet, it would be a “C” above the staff on the Piccolo Trumpet. The Piccolo Trumpet also doesn't have a main tuning slide as your regular trumpet.

The piccolo trumpet was invented to make early music, originally written for the natural trumpet, more accessible to modern players. Most instruments can be tuned to both A and Bb by changing the leadpipe. Piccolo trumpets in G, F and high C also exist, but are quite rare.
