Notes consist of several different components, including a notehead , stem , beam , and flag . Common note values include the whole note , half note , quarter note , eighth note , and sixteenth note . Common rest values include the whole rest , half rest , quarter rest , eighth rest , and sixteenth rest .

Note values are key to understanding notation and rhythm. Note values in music theory are the symbols and names of notes that display the rhythm and duration of notes heard in Western notation.

The value of each note duration is always double the value that follows it:

1. 1 Whole Note = 2 Half Notes.
2. 1 Half Note = 2 Quarter Notes.
3. 1 Quarter Note = 2 Eight Notes.
4. 1 Eight Note = 2 Sixteenth Notes.
5. 1 Sixteenth Note = 2 Thirty-Second Notes.
6. 1 Thirty-Second Note = 2 Sixty-Fourth Notes.

FRACTIONS – PART OF A WHOLE. Each note has its own note value. Note values tell us how many beats a note gets, or how long the note will last. But how do the notes get their names (whole, half, etc.)?

They tell us what note to play and for how long. Rests tell us how long to play nothing, or have silence in the music.

The most basic notes to learn on piano are the white keys. These keys are labeled: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. The middle of the piano is the note C, so it may be helpful to think of the notes in this order: C, D, E, F, G, A, B.

Same with the second measure. So now that we know what a time signature is instead of just counting. One one one one for four quarter notes we count one two three four for every measure.

The duration of the note or rest is determined by the note or rest value. A note is beats of sound, while a rest is a beats of silence. a dot adds half of a note's value to that note; to count a dotted quarter note you can say "one the dot" (which is the same as 1 & 2 in order to count out the correct beats.

quarter note The quarter note equals one beat. The dot is half the value of the note, which is half of a beat. Add one beat and half of a beat and you get a dotted quarter note that equals one and a half beats! A common rhythm pattern you will see in music is the dotted quarter note followed by a single eighth note.
