In music, a half note (American) or minim (British) is a note played for half the duration of a whole note (or semibreve) and twice the duration of a quarter note (or crotchet).

But instead of clapping ha. Ha. We'll only clap on top. And then we'll pulse our hand once for uh like this ha ah. So with two half notes together it'll sound like ha.

It's written with an open note head like this in British terminology the half note is called a minim. Here's a little piece that contains quarter notes on top and half notes on the bottom.

For example, as 1 Half Note = 2 Quarter Notes, half of a Half Note = 1 quarter note.

It means that the tempo of a half note (or minim) should be between 76 and 80 beats per minute.

Finally, another common tempo is the half note beat in cut time. This means the metronome should be set to 120 beats, and each of those ticks equals 1 half note. So if you're playing a bunch of quarter notes, you'll be able to fit two quarter notes inside of each half beat.

2 beats The duration of a half note is 2 beats. Notice that the half note is twice as long as the quarter note. Since a half note gets 2 beats, and remember that a quarter note gets 1 beat, that means that you will count and play a half note twice as long as quarter note.

An eighth note (quaver) is 1/2 of a beat.

Half notes last for 2 counts, or twice as long as a quarter note. Half notes are probably the second most common type of rhythm after quarter notes. You can think of half notes as half of one measure, or the same thing as two quarter notes.

But in most cases, a whole note is worth four counts or beats. The next duration is the half note. It also consists of a hollow notehead, but this time we add a stem. The half note is worth one half the value of a whole note. So two half notes would equal one whole note.
