Kontrafagott

The Contrabassoon is the biggest instrument of the Woodwind family. The only difference is that it is double bigger than a Bassoon. It is played like the Bassoon and are made of the same materials. It produces its sound by blowing into the reed, like in the Bassoon.

Etymology. Semi-anglicized version of Italian contrafagotto, probably following the model of the English word contrabass (which derives from Italian contrabbasso).

Contrabassoon parts are notated an octave above sounding pitch, and most often use bass clef. Like bassoon, extended high-register passages may use tenor clef, though this is rarely necessary due to the rarity of such passages.

Did you know that the Contrabassoon is the largest woodwind instrument in the world? It's approximately two times the size of a regular bassoon! The Contrabassoon is the deepest sounding instrument amongst all double-reed instruments.

Larger orchestras use three bassoons and a contrabassoon, and here too the third bassoonist can switch to contrabassoon if necessary. Like the oboes and the bassoon the contrabassoon is a double-reed instrument, because the mouthpiece has two reeds that lie very close together.

The piccolo, contrabassoon, and other instruments whose parts are written an octave above or below the actual pitch (as c′ above c) are not considered transposing instruments.
