What Is an Invention in Music? An invention is a short musical composition based around two-part counterpoint. Its closest musical cousin is the fugue, but from a music theory perspective, inventions are simpler forms.

Music can also be used for communication, often over large distances, using instruments such as drums or horns. Yet another reason for music is ritual, and virtually every religion uses music. However, the major reason that music arose and persists may be that it brings people together.

Prehistoric Music The earliest forms of music were probably drum-based, percussion instruments being the most readily available at the time (i.e. rocks, sticks). These simplest of simple instruments are thought to have been used in religious ceremonies as representations of animals.

The short answer is: No one knows who invented music. No historical evidence exists to tell us exactly who sang the first song, or whistled the first tune, or made the first rhythmic sounds that resembled what we know today as music. But researchers do know it happened thousands of years ago.

Generally four types of inventive products are distinguished: technological invention, scientific invention, artistic invention, and cultural invention. Invention depends on creative cognitive processes such as combination, analogy, and abstraction.

An invention is creating something totally new with one's own ideas and development. Although an invention is completely new to the world, the physical material needed for its production already exists, innovated from the ideas and experiences of the individual. Thus making inventions unique.
