Music history, sometimes called historical musicology, is a highly diverse subfield of the broader discipline of musicology that studies music from a historical point of view.

Types of Score Editions

• Autograph or Holograph -- The composer's own manuscript, written by them.
• Copies -- Handwritten copies of a manuscript, copied by a relative, student, colleague, or other copyist.
• First edition -- The first commercially published edition, often published in consultation with the composer.

As it was in medieval Europe and the Indus valley civilization, music is used for religious purposes. As was in ancient China and Europe during much of the Baroque and classical periods, music is still played for rulers, as a symbol of national identity, but also as a courtroom tradition.

For both performers and listeners, another reason to know the history of music is because it brings music alive and makes it more meaningful. History can be a way of imagining what it must have been like to be a person living in a certain place and time, with experiences in some ways very different from our own.

Since ancient times, music and song have been used as historical sources. Cultural, religious, and social events have all been documented using them. Music has a long and illustrious history in human history.

The Hurrian Hymn was discovered in the 1950s on a clay tablet inscribed with Cuneiform text. It's the oldest surviving melody and is over 3,400 years old. The hymn was discovered on a clay tablet in Ugarit, now part of modern-day Syria, and is dedicated the Hurrians' goddess of the orchards Nikkal.

Historical events often give rise to new subcultures and musical genres that capture the zeitgeist of their time. Such events have also led to changes in the way music was produced at that time and also its style.

Early humans probably banged rocks together to make tools. When they did, pieces might have broken off that they used for another purpose, such as scraping. Those same pieces of stone could have been used to scrape rhythms on shells, wood or other stones. Early people probably made clapping sounds with their hands.

GOOD Music was founded in 2004 by Kanye West in conjunction with Sony BMG, shortly after the release of his debut album The College Dropout. Ohio singer John Legend and fellow Chicago rapper Common were the label's initial artists, along with West himself.

Historical source is an original source that contains important historical information. These sources are something that inform us about history at the most basic level, and are used as clues in order to study history.
