Basic Music Elements

It is derived from a long line of successive precursors: the Old English 'musike' of the mid-13th century; the Old French musique of the 12th century; and the Latin mūsica. The Latin word itself derives from the Ancient Greek mousiké (technē) - μουσική (τέχνη) - literally meaning "(art) of the Muses".

Elements of music include, timbre, texture, rhythm, melody, beat, harmony, structure, tempo, pitch and dynamics.

So next time you are listening to a piece of music, try to separate out the parts and listen to how each of the Elements of Music are being used. Listen for the Dynamics, Form, Harmony, Melody, Rhythm, Texture, Timbre and Tonality. You might even want to start keeping a listening journal of the music you hear.

mousike In ancient Greek mythology, the nine muses and daughters of Zeus, king of the gods, presided over music, song and dance. Indeed, the word music is thought to have derived from the Greek word 'mousike' meaning 'Art of the Muses'.

Apollo As the god of mousike, Apollo presides over all music, songs, dance and poetry. He is the inventor of string-music and the frequent companion of the Muses, functioning as their chorus leader in celebrations. The lyre is a common attribute of Apollo.
