gaita

Gaita zuliana (often simply called "gaita") is a style of Venezuelan folk music (and dance) from Maracaibo, Zulia State. According to Joan Coromines, it may come from the word "gaits," the Gothic word for "goat", which is the skin generally used for the membrane of the furro drum.

bagpipe The word gaita is used across northern Spain as a generic term for "bagpipe", although in the south of Spain and Portugal it denotes a variety of horn, flute or oboe like instruments according to region.

Origins/History/Evolution According to List, this Columbian instrument is “without question indigenous” to South America and he found no firm evidence of its existence in Europe or Africa. The gaita most likely evolved from shorter duct-flutes of highland Amerindian groups such as the Kogi (Cágaba), Ika, and Cuna.
