down-bow

An important, but often overstated, aspect of Baroque playing is the "rule of the down bow", which says that any stressed beat – and in particular the first beat of a bar – ought to be played with a down-bow.

A down bow is played by pulling the bow from the frog to the tip. On the violin and viola, playing a down bow means the bow moves toward the ground. On the cello and double bass, down bows move from left to right from the player's perspective. An up bow is played by pulling the bow from the tip to the frog.

Down bow is the bow direction from frog to tip. The player pushes the bow down (to the right), away from the left shoulder. Up bow is the bow direction from tip to frog. The player pulls the bow up (to the left), toward the left shoulder. This doesn't matter where on the bow you start.

In general if a phrase starts on a weak beat (a pickup, for example) that will be an up-bow. If it starts on a strong beat, that will be down, simple as that. Long notes at soft dynamics start on an up-bow as that is the easiest way to start softly.
