Credo

In the course of our archival work, we have come to the groundbreaking year of 1968, when Arvo Pärt composed “Credo” for piano, mixed choir and large symphony orchestra. In terms of musical material, it was a work of the 1960s, combining elements of dodecaphony, sonorism, collage and aleatoricism.

Credo comes straight from the Latin word meaning "I believe", and is the first word of many religious credos, or creeds, such as the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed.

The music is basically in descant or treble-dominated style: a melodically and rhythmically elaborated upper part over two slower moving parts, usually for instruments.

A creed is often a shared and established statement of belief. The Nicene Creed was established to be a statement of faith symbolizing a shared understanding of Christianity between believers. Credo, or "I believe," tends to be a personal statement and is not necessarily bound by a group.

Relatively brief, simple vocal composition, usually a setting of a poetic text, often strophic, for accompanied solo voice.

It is categorized into these types based on the number of notes sung in each syllable. Syllabic chants have one note per syllable, neumatic chants consist of two or three notes per syllable, and melismatic chants have many notes for one syllable.

“Keep it simple, keep it honest, keep it you.” This credo stresses the importance of authenticity, simplicity and honesty in life. The belief is built around the idea that these three core values can lead to satisfaction and fulfillment.

The word “creed” comes from the Latin word “credo,” which means to believe or a commitment to and profession of faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines a creed as a symbol of faith.
