The cornetto is a hybrid instrument with the fingerholes of a woodwind and a brass-type mouthpiece. It was used extensively in the Renaissance in ensembles and later as a solo instrument capable of playing virtuosic divisions.

Without the trumpet, the usual Renaissance brass ensemble consisted of the sackbut with the cornetto, or Zink, as Praetorius and his countrymen termed it (also known in England simply as the “cornet” or “cornett”).

A trumpet has a cylindrical bore, which results in a bright, piercing sound, while a cornet has a continuously conical bore, which provides a warmer sound. (Their larger-sized brass instrument cousin, the flugelhorn, offers an even softer tone due to its larger, rounder and even more conical bore.)

Surviving instruments in museums are mainly treble with a range of A3 to A5. A few survive as tenor instruments, range C3 to D5. In other languages, this is called gerader Zink and gelber Zink in German, and cornetto diritto or cornetto bianco in Italian.

In southern and central Italy, the pastry is known as a cornetto, meaning “little horn” in Italian, whereas in the north of Italy, the pastry is referred to as a brioche. The ingredients for a cornetto are flour, eggs, sugar, milk, butter, yeast and salt. Egg yolk is brushed on the top providing a golden color.
