The cornet (/ˈkɔːrnɪt/, US: /kɔːrˈnɛt/) is a brass instrument similar to the trumpet but distinguished from it by its conical bore, more compact shape, and mellower tone quality. The most common cornet is a transposing instrument in B♭.

The ordinary curved treble cornett is made by splitting a length of wood ("plum, cherry or pear") and carving out the two halves to make the gently conical, curved bore. The halves are then glued together, and the outside planed to an octagonal cross section, the whole being bound in thin black leather.

They buzz their lips into the cup to produce a tone and cover the six fingerholes and one thumb hole on the instrument to change its pitch. The cornetto can play a complete chromatic scale (all the white and black keys on a piano), but they do not all sound the same.

Like the trumpet, the cornett has a mouthpiece or cup, where the instrument is sounded with the player's lips. Like the flute, it has fingerholes and sometimes keys to determine pitch; pitch can also be changed on low notes by the tension of the player's lips.

A trumpet has a cylindrical bore, which results in a bright, piercing sound, while a cornet has a continuously conical bore, which provides a warmer sound. (Their larger-sized brass instrument cousin, the flugelhorn, offers an even softer tone due to its larger, rounder and even more conical bore.)

The cornetto is a hybrid instrument with the fingerholes of a woodwind and a brass-type mouthpiece. It was used extensively in the Renaissance in ensembles and later as a solo instrument capable of playing virtuosic divisions.

To produce a sound, the cornet player places the lips to the mouthpiece, presses them together firmly, and blows air through the middle to make them vibrate or “buzz.” By altering the pressure of the lips, the cornet player can change the pitch produced.

The cornet also has a conical shaped bore (the main bit leading up to the bell where the sound comes out) whereas the trumpet has a cylindrical shaped bore. The two instruments also have different mouthpieces, although it is harder to notice this difference merely by looking at the two instruments.
