one string Una corda literally means 'one string' and by depressing the Una corda fully, the whole action and keyboard shifts to the right (on a grand piano), allowing the hammers to strike one string fewer than usual, therefore reducing the sound and resonance.

This is how the oboe and the cor anglais differ. The oboe is a C woodwind with a base pitch tuned to C, while the cor anglais is an F woodwind with a base pitch tuned a perfect fifth lower, to F.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the piano had evolved to have three strings to most notes. The soft pedal of this time was more effective than today, since it was possible to use it to strike three, two, or even just one string per note - this is the origin of the name una corda (Italian for 'one string').

On a grand piano, the una corda pedal shifts the entire mechanism to the right, so the hammer only hits two of the three strings. The resulting note is softer. Also, since the strings are hit by a different part of the hammer, the sound is muted and less bright.

A lower pitched instrument is the A woodwind, the oboe d'amore, which is pitched in A major. Even lower is the F woodwind, the cor anglais (also known as the English horn), pitched in F major. Those are just two of the relatives of the oboe.

The English word Alps comes from the Latin Alpes. The Latin word Alpes could possibly come from the adjective albus ("white"), or could possibly come from the Greek goddess Alphito, whose name is related to alphita, the "white flour"; alphos, a dull white leprosy; and finally the Proto-Indo-European word *albʰós.
