Composer Zeca Afonso, also known as José Manuel Cerqueira Afonso dos Santos , was a highly influential Portuguese musician and political activist. Born on August 2, 1929 in Aveiro, Portugal, he is best known for his contributions to the Portuguese folk music genre and for his opposition to the dictatorship that ruled Portugal for nearly 50 years.

Afonso studied history and philosophy at the University of Coimbra, where he began writing and performing music. He was known for writing songs that were politically charged, focusing on issues such as workers' rights and anti-fascism. His most famous song, "Grândola, Vila Morena," was played on the radio on April 25, 1974 as a signal to Portuguese military officers to begin the Carnation Revolution, which overthrew the dictatorship.

Afonso continued to perform and record music throughout his life, releasing over twenty albums and collaborating with many other musicians. His music was highly influential in Portugal, not only for its political messages but also for its innovative use of traditional folk instruments and rhythms.

Afonso passed away on February 23, 1987, but his legacy has lived on in Portuguese music and politics. He is remembered as one of the most important and beloved composers in Portuguese history, and his music continues to inspire new generations of musicians and activists.
