He is the third and youngest child of musician and composer Ilaiyaraaja. Yuvan Shankar Raja mainly works in the Tamil film industry in India , but has also composed music for Telugu and Malayalam films.

Yuvan Shankar Raja made his debut as a music composer in the Tamil film Aravindhan in 1997. He has since then composed music for numerous Tamil films and has won several awards for his work, including the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Music Director in 2006 and 2010.
